Winona, Minnesota, like most cities and towns in the United States, was offered rail service
by many railroad companies.
Here is an attempt to name them all. In alphabetical order they are:
AMTRAK
Burlington Northern
Burlington Northern Santa Fe
Canadian Pacific
Chicago Burlington & Quincy
Chicago, Milwaukee St.Paul & Pacific (The Milwaukee Road)
Chicago & North Western
Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern
Green Bay & Western
Soo Line
Union Pacific
Winona & St. Peter
Winona & Southwestern
Winona Transit Company
(List not yet complete)
All these railroads added to the history, lore, and character of the many cities they
passed through. Famous passenger trains and mile long freights, brought people,
merchandise, building materials, fuels, communications and civilization to vast portions
of the north American continent.
We would like for people to share their stories and recollections from the past. We hope many will
pass along ideas about model railroading and find resources that will help with their model
railroading, train watching and riding. Here, we hope to provide
links to manufacturers, suppliers and useful information about railroading events,
railroad excurions and museums that might be of interest to those who visit
this site.
If you wish to submit photos, articles, short stories, recollections of the past, current
events or other railroading information, please, do submit them to Winona Shops.
They will be reviewed and posted to the site, provided they are of interest and of
suitable content for family viewing. It is our intention to establish a sort of 'Diner' or
'Club Car' atmosphere where people can share experiences so others might gain an
appreciation of the past ... and the present.
